On April 4th Japan Music Copyright Association (JASRAC) will conduct a demonstration using Blockchain for music copyright management from February 13th until March 13th, 2020.
Five major music publishers will support JASRAC in this demonstration. However, no news regarding its full-scale implementation is available at the moment. This demonstration will focus on the work that happens before a publisher submits a notification regarding their music to JASRAC.
A music publisher, lyricist, or composer can create a record on the Blockchain claiming that the song is produced by him/her and add a hash value to that content along with a creator ID, time certification information.
The arbitrary metadata, which attributes information, related to the music, can also be added to this record. The composer provided the privilege to view and append the record to other companies as well.
Down the line, JASRAC is planning to use this feature to grant browsing rights and use it for a variety of notification, such as the works from creators to JASRAC.
“We manage JASRAC-managed songs in a working database. It is not practical to replace this with a blockchain. Still, we believe blockchains can be used in areas around the work database.”, the Managing Director of JASRAC, Naofumi Nakatogawa, commented.
He currently understands the use of Blockchain technology. He added that Sony would build systems like Blockchain infrastructure and applications that will be used during the demonstration of this project.
