Ethereum Name Service Has Migrated All .ETH Domains To New Registry

  • The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has migrated all their registered .ETH second-level names to a new registry.
  • The ENS team confirms that there isn’t a need to update your ENS name’s resolver for the domain to work.

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has migrated all their registered.ETH second-level names to a new registry. All users who owned ENS registered data with the .ETH extensions have their data and name now present in the new register.

Even though the service has covered most users and data, there are still a few exceptional cases that ENS detailed in a blog post on Medium.

Firstly, the ENS says that users will have to check for themselves if their dApps and wallets have been updated to use the new ENS registry. The team says that the best way to do this is to check migrated.eth and verify whether the wallet/dApp resolves the name.

The old registry does not have an address set and the migrated.eth won’t resolve the name stored on the wallet/dApp if they are still on the old ENS registry. The team also has a public spreadsheet out that contains a list of all the services that have linked with ENS and their update status to the new register. This might be slightly less accurate as developers might update their dApps/wallets without notifying ENS.

Secondly, the ENS team confirms that there isn’t a need to update your ENS name’s resolver for the domain to work. The only time a customer needs to update their public resolver is if they want to make changes to their records.

Thirdly, all second-level names and subdomains that have been distributed by the ENS subdomain registrars have been migrated over to the new registry. But the ones that have been custom made by the customers have not.

The custom subdomains have to be manually migrated from the ENS manager’s subdomain section. Migration to the new register will require ownership of the parent name and previous migration of the parent domain to the new registry.

Finally, all names that were distributed during the 2017 auction have also been migrated to the new registry with the same expiration date. Deposit recovery will require the customer to do so from the ENS Manager manually and to keep holding onto the name after May 2020. The name will have to be renewed for $5/year.

Other cases of non-migrated addresses are .XYZ names. These will have to be manually migrated too. Other TLD name extensions are custom managed by the TLD operators, and further information will have to be taken from there.

The ENS service built on the Ethereum blockchain allows users to attach Ethereum-based data such as smart contracts, wallet addresses, etc. with human-readable .ETH names simplifying the complex naming system that is normally associated with data on Ethereum and cryptocurrencies in general.
