Under 250 meters underground in an abandoned coal mine, the world’s leading software development platform, GitHub has selected to store reams of open-source code.  Among them, Bitcoin Core is the one. Till now, the most popular code implementation of bitcoin’s fundamental infrastructure and widely used repositories on GitHub.

Following a part of am archiving program for protecting an important asset of technological history. The snapshots of these codes will be converted into film reels and will be kept in a steel container; these preparations are done in order to safeguard the data alive for 1000 years.

GitHub: The official deposit of data into the mountain has been planned for late April

The team is currently working to get this data ready. A representative from GitHub stated the official deposit of data into the mountain has been planned for late April. As the Bitcoin Core is introduced most of the crypto projects stored on GitHub will also be included.

This includes bitcoin’s Lightning Network, and the code behind other cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum and Dogecoin. Some non-profit digital library Internet Archive and Long Now Foundations are backing this effort. While the historians, anthropologists and other scientists are advising it.

The top crypto coins Bitcoin and Ethereum coders are excited about this initiative. The lead maintainer of Bitcoin Core, Wladimir van der Laan, stated that in future the electronic records will be vanished, as these are quite delicate. By preserving the hard copy will definitely help to avoid a hole in history.

Avanti CTO and Bitcoin Core contributor Bryan Bishop notified that this is an attractive part of financial history that we can preserve it for future research and study.

Van der Laan further pointed out that since hundreds of years from now, the code may not make much sense to the coders.

GitHub must consider archiving Sci-Hub

A similar statement emerged from the founder of Ethereum infrastructure project Truebit and a computer science researcher Jason Teutsch, social, economic and academic records explaining resources for code development will become significantly important that the code itself.

A developer and a wiki host for futurist technological ideas, Avanti’s Bishop is also looking to safeguard information even further in the future. Bishop is expecting for a patent to store the information in-depth of DNA.

He finds that the genetic instruction that allows the growth of an organism can store information for hundreds of thousands of years.

Bishop stated beyond GitHub, they must consider archiving Sci-Hub which carries over 70 million scientific articles.
