The Megatrend in Cryptography was Elliptic Curves
According to Buterin, in 2010, the megatrend in cryptography was elliptic curves, pairings, and general-purpose ZKPs/SNARKs. Elliptic curve pairings, also known as bilinear maps, are used for cryptographic applications.
Buterin finds that during 2010, the elliptic curves, pairings, and general-purpose ZKPs/SNARKs were popular among the digital industry. Still, moving to 2020, the trend will be an upgraded version of the 2010 pattern. It will include a broad adoption of lattices, LWE, multilinear maps, homomorphic encryption, MPC, and obfuscation.
Prediction:
The megatrend in cryptography of the 2010s was elliptic curves, pairings and general purpose ZKPs/SNARKs.
The megatrend of the 2020s will be (in addition to broad adoption of the above) lattices, LWE, multilinear maps, homomorphic encryption, MPC and obfuscation.

However adding to this, he further opined that the common between both the trends in the growth of cryptographic primitives that operate over Boolean or arithmetic circuits as a mathematical representation of computation and thus, cryptographic structure are becoming general purpose.
