The Internet is undoubtedly a 2-sided coin. On one side where its capability of instantaneous data sending and receiving is praiseworthy, it paving the way to nasty things like child pornography is irrefutable. The latest technology can open gateways to a gloomy world wherein criminals gain mastery over the doubtful advantages of the tech.

The prevailing criminals have raised an alarm in South Korea for the need to take a responsive action against them. South Korean police have availed themselves of cryptocurrency in tracking down sellers and buyers involved in such a crime.

Pornography in South Korea brings dishonor nation-wide

Last month, law enforcement compelled the South Korean police to raid 20 of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges. This was done so as to get access to the user accounts. The collective information gathered from various sources helped the police locate around 40 individuals involved in the crime. They have reportedly exploited cryptocurrency for the purchasing of child pornography via the Telegram app.

It is worth notifying that major cryptocurrency exchanges including Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, and Korbit have come forward themselves to support the police. The exchanges will volunteer in the investigation of the so-called “nth room” phenomenon. This case with the label-’Nth room’ has apparently brought dishonor to the whole of South Korea.

What Caused the ‘Nth Room’ Labelling?

The reason for the labeling lies in the way the entire criminal operation had been set up. Few individuals involved in the distribution of hardcore pornography to keen buyers by the creation of rooms on the cloud-based messaging app, Telegram. A person, in particular, had created a series of rooms starting from the “1st room” up to the “8th room,” which was hence referred to as the Nth room. Another group run by a person named Doctor was labeled the Doctor’s room. The person was then identified as Cho Joo-bin, a 24-year old technical college graduate apparently.

These two groups are claimed for having blackmailed victims. The victims were blackmailed for engaging in unpleasant sexual videos which were then sold. Furthermore, it is a saddening fact that 16 middle-school-aged children were featured in the Doctor’s Room. And, the number of victims are around 74 and more in total.

It is reported that 10,000 members of the Doctor’s room had been involved. Police reported a number of 30,000 of the paying members exclusively from the “Doctor’s room”.

The rooms have operated on the messaging app starting from 2018 up until this year. The South Korean police have estimated a number close to 26,000 of those who paid with the cryptocurrency. And hence, it has helped them figure out that crypto doesn’t feature anonymity that extremely.

Child Pornography has caused torture in the U.S too

Child pornography has caused great torture everywhere. In the year 2015, U.S based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) had received around 26 million videos and photos. Also, it has come to light through the FBI that victims accounting to 10,500 have been identified since 2002.

It must not be mistaken that victims belong to a particular region or a category, people have fallen under the category of victims regardless of their ages. Ages ranging from an infant to an 18-year-old. NCMEC in 2013 had also pointed out that parents were responsible for creating the child pornography content 18% of the time. And, neighbors had created 25% of child pornography content.
