The Chinese TON community has announced the launch of its testnet and the official TON testnet is expected to shut down by August 1st. It further stated that it would airdrop TON coins to the community, the official mainnet currency of TON. It will be available for all Telegram users and the total supply will be 10 million TONcoins.
TON Aimed at Providing Various DApps & Payment Options
TON is a Telegram based open source project. Its codebase was officially published on GitHub in September 2017. TON basically is a blockchain platform that was aimed at providing several payment options and decentralised applications that big financial institutions such as Visa were unable to provide. Its platform token that was named Gram was to be integrated into the Telegram application. Initially, TON Community was a China-based project. However, its project founder Tooz Wu has said that the project is being widely supported by countries like Singapore and Russia.
Telegram Ceased To Support TON Due To A Legal Battle With The SEC
Only a few weeks ago, because of the SEC, Telegram decided that it would stop supporting the development of the Telegram Open Network (TON) testnet. The US Securities and Exchange Commission were keen on proving that TON’s private initial public offering which was worth $1.7 billion was unregistered under the security sale premises. Under the tough inspection of the SEC, the platform of TON fell into the hands of independent developers. Consequently, new community-based projects were formed such as Free TON, NewTON, and TON Community Blockchain. Recently, in a competition held for developers and network validators, FreeTON has distributed 1,342,000 TON tokens.
The New ‘testnet3’ Is A Continuation Of The Previous ‘testnet2’
The test network is named ‘testnet3’ and is expected to extend the official TON testnet which was dubbed as ‘testnet2’. On their official page, the TON community has announced the official TON mainnet will go down on the coming 1st of August. They have further clarified that this has nothing to do with the Official Telegram network. Furthermore, they emphasized the integration of social networks and crypto which is necessary for widespread and mainstream adoption of crypto.
