The Story Of GameStop and Reddit
GameStop is a video game retailer store declining in terms of share market value over the past years. However, a group of retail investors on Reddit’s “WallStreetBets” forum pushed the gaming merchandiser’s shares to grow higher. The prices increased from a mere $6 to a whopping $469 last week. This led to immense chaos at Wall Street, after witnessing a 130% increase in a forgotten stock in just 24 hours.
This incident forms the crux of Ben Mezrich’s book proposal, which is titled “The Antisocial Network.” American media company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) has obtained the rights to produce a movie based on the same.
The havoc at Wall Street is currently going on, and the book is set to be auctioned off to possible publishing houses by the end of this month.
Bringing Down Large Hedge Funds
Winklevoss Pictures, established by business visionaries and bitcoin (BTC, +0.35%) tycoons Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, will produce the film, as per a report published by Deadline. Aaron Ryder, who is the creator of “Appearance” and “Donnie Darko,” has been chosen to deliver the new film. He has signed a first-look film contract with MGM.
The story hovers around Reddit’s WallStreetBets group and their undertaking to cut down huge multifaceted investments by driving a short press on stocks. These large hedge funds include GameStop (GME), AMC Entertainment (AMC), and Nokia (NOK), along with others.
Mezrich will work with Michael DeLuca, the producer at MGM. They have also teamed up on “The Social Network,” which is an anecdote about Facebook’s ascent to popularity, also written by Mezrich. He has written over 20 books, with more than 6,000,000 copies sold so far.
