- At the moment, only the cards associated with crypto-mining seem to be undergoing warranty-period reduction
- Not inclined to buy products with lesser guarantee, people now await the stocks to be availed, which won’t be happening till at least mid-2022
- Reports reveal crypto-mining is a major reason behind this hardware shortage
The world of PC gaming is constantly evolving, but the situation doesn’t look much great at the moment. Hardware supplies, especially graphics cards, are at their all-time low, and it only shows signs of getting worse. Reports suggest the supply shortage will continue well into 2022 or even 2023. Adding another distress to an already deteriorating present, MSI, the world’s leading gaming brand, is reducing warranties on its graphics cards.
MSI Slashing Warranties
The top Gaming gear provider, Micro-Star International or MSI, has decided to slash warranties on some of its Russian graphics processing unit (GPU) products to just six months. The list includes at least 19 products. Unsurprisingly, Gigabyte also released a card with just a 90-days warranty. For now, only the cards associated with crypto-mining seem to be affected, but it won’t take long for it to move to Nvidia or AMD’s other hardware too.
Usually, GPUs have a 36-month warranty, so reducing it to just six months, much less 3, is a significant drop; moreover, graphics cards are difficult to acquire. With big brands like Nvidia re-launching old products, consumers are worried about what the future holds for hardware.
Impact on the Market
MSI is a renowned multinational company, so their warranty-period reducing decision, amplified by the manufacturer of the award-winning products, Gigabyte’s kind of similar approach, is sure to have a massive impact on the market. Starting with crypto-mining cards, it could soon be a trend for gaming cards to come with significantly less warranty than usual. In general, people don’t want to purchase hardware with lesser guarantees, so now what they await is the stocks to be availed, which won’t be happening till at least mid-2022.
Crypto-mining Caused the Shortage
As already mentioned, only crypto-mining required graphics cards seem to be undergoing a warranty reduction now. After all, crypto-mining is a major reason behind this shortage. Miners buying stocks left and right, hardly left any for the gamers. One bitcoin company even boasted about buying GPUs worth $30 million; not hard to imagine where the rest of them vanished to, right?
