Nvidia is again limiting its RTX 3060 graphics cards for mining Ethereum, as per a report in Verge.com.
Nvidia, the technology giant, based in Sant Clara, California, manufactures graphics processing units (GPUs) for the gaming and professional markets and has brought forth a new update adding a hash limiter to the GPU VideoCardz.com.
Nvidia had earlier tried to limit mining performance on the RTX 3060. In February, it rolled out new drivers which intended to control the hash rate of Ethereum mining by around 50 percent.
Matt Wuebbling, head of global GeForce marketing at Nvidia, gave the news in a blog post and said Nvidia designed GeForce GPUs for gamers. Nvidia also announced a new GPU explicitly meant for cryptocurrency mining named Nvidia CMP (Cryptocurrency Mining Processor).
A costly mistake
However, the update was short-lived, and Nividia accidentally unlocked the limit it had set in a beta release in March. The mistake proved costly, and the updated driver RTX 3060 became easily accessible. Owners were able to download it and avoid the new restrictions.
Move to discourage use by crypto miners
The new GeForce 466.27 driver restored the original limit. Verge.com reports that the latest driver will be required for all future RTX 3060 cards starting in May. Nvidia intends to add the hash rate limits to the other cards also. Verge.com adds that a refurbished version of “LHR” (Lite Hash Rate) GPUs across the other RTX 30-series cards (including the RTX 3060 Ti, 3070, and 3080 models) is in the making. It will discourage cryptocurrency miners from gobbling up the limited stocks primarily for gaming consumers.
