While it is not sure if Dogecoin value will touch the Moon, a Canadian-based company is reportedly going to use the meme-based cryptocurrency to pay SpaceX to take a satellite to the Moon. Coindesk reports that dogecoin (DOGE, -4.38%) will be used as a currency for the first-ever commercial lunar payload in history.
The DOGE-1 payload will be launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in Q1 2022.
The Shiba Inu themed cryptocurrency will be used by the Canadian-based company to cover the cost of launching a satellite into the Lunar Orbit by SpaceX. Geometric Energy Corp. is launching the DOGE-1 Mission to the Moon aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the first quarter of 2022.
Interplanetary commerce
In a press release quoted by Coindesk, SpaceX Vice President of Commercial Sales, Tom Ochinero said that the launch of DOGE-1 would demonstrate the viability of cryptocurrency beyond our planet and lay the foundation of interplanetary commerce.
The satellite will obtain lunar spatial data with the help of sensors and cameras on-board using communications and computational systems, GSC said in the statement.
