  • The Colorado Governor has committed himself to make the state the center for blockchain innovation in the United States.

The Colorado vs. Wyoming banter for the title of ‘the blockchain & crypto-friendly state of America’ has ascended to another level. This Tuesday, attending a seminar, Colorado Governor Jared Polis took a jab at the Cowboy State. He claimed Colorado has “better nightlife than Wyoming,” and was met with Caitlin Long’s sassy rebuttal. A high-profile bitcoiner and leading Wyoming crypto advocate, Long wrote, “many Coloradans drove up to Cheyenne just to dine & drink!”.

Colorado: First State To Approve Crypto For Tax Payment

The ‘Day 2’ of the 4-day virtual conference saw Polis on the dice as a panelist, sharing plans for the first state to approve and accept “a variety of” cryptocurrencies for state taxes. He is thrilled with the notion and hopes for the development to be adopted soon. Acknowledging and emphasizing the importance of home-grown technology in the state’s economy. The governor looks forward to building strong support for blockchain technology and innovation, improving the lives of all Coloradans.

Governor Jared Polis: A Bitcoin Advocate

A Colorado native, Jared Polis is an entrepreneur, education leader, and public servant who founded several innovative online businesses, including ProFlowers, Techstars, and Patriot Boot Camp.

He became the first politician to legally accept Bitcoin (BTC) as campaign donations. The nifty governor is also known for trolling the legislators on Capitol Hill, who preferred banning bitcoin over building a crypto-friendly federal structure.

Polis simply replaced each instance of bitcoin in the Senator’s letter with “dollar bills,” satirically suggesting a ban on the USD. The episode even earned him ‘the Rocky Mountain State’s chief executive’ title.

Polis is excited to guide and accommodate crypto legislation. With Colorado officially open for business for blockchain companies, he has committed himself to make the state “the center for blockchain innovation in the United States.”

And in achieving that, allowing Coloradoans to pay state taxes in cryptocurrency is a huge step forward.

Failed Attempts At Crypto For Tax Payment

However, history hasn’t been kind to such pilots. In 2018, Ohio initiated tax payment through OhioCrypto.com, which ended in 2019, as in that one year, only 10 companies used the site, reported new treasurer Robert Sprague.

During the same timeline, Arizona and Illinois were also considering a similar program, but the idea never saw the light of day.

Seminole County, Florida, also incorporated a crypto-for-tax-payment program. It faces a similar fate as Ohio, it ended soon after the county treasurer got arrested.

But the present case’s different! With crypto technology advancement providing more infrastructure to the digital asset, cryptocurrency’s adoption for state tax payments seems more plausible. And Governor Polis is eager to test the theory.
