Intro: Walmart, a retail giant from America has posted a job on its website and social media seeking an experienced cryptocurrency product lead. Through this Walmart gave a hint of accepting payments in cryptocurrency. However, the giant has so far denied accepting payments in cryptocurrency.

Walmart, a retail giant from the U.S. has posted a job in its career section on its website seeking an experienced cryptocurrency product lead. It is North America’s largest retailer by total sales. As per the job posting, the new role for Digital Currency and Cryptocurrency Product Lead is required for the development of a digital currency strategy and product roadmap.

Through this job posting on its website and LinkedIn page, it is confirmed that the company is all set to accept cryptocurrency as payments, though nothing has been divulged so far.

Roadmap for Cryptocurrency

As per the posting, it is mentioned that the position seeks an expert in Digital Currencies/Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain related technologies which will drive the vision for the product and capabilities roadmap. The ad also describes that the successful applicant would also identify crypto-related investments and partnerships.

Under the job description, the basic education requirements for the position is Bachelor’s Degree (though MBA is preferred), more than 10 years of experience in product or program management, technology commercialization, and experience with the cryptocurrency ecosystem and related technologies. However, the salary for the position was not mentioned.

The job posting came less than a month when rival commerce giant Amazon posted its job ad for a cryptocurrency and blockchain product lead. The team had in July posted a job for an experienced product leader to manage Amazon’s digital currency and blockchain strategy and product roadmap.

This job posting by Amazon created speculation that the giant will accept payment in cryptocurrency. However, Amazon has declined any reports that it would accept BTC.

The Race Begins

Walmart had applied for a patent on a stable crypto token similar to Facebook’s Libra project two years ago. But no further news had emerged about this. Walmart has also experimented with distributed ledger technology for non-financial uses like tracking drugs and food along the supply chain.

In December 2020, Walmart partnered with StormX for Blockchain-based rewards platform. StormX offered a 4% crypto back incentive for all Walmart purchases at the time. The giant has had its experiences with the newest of technologies every time, and it is only a matter of time when these retail giants will open the doors to accept crypto payments. The rest will follow the suit quickly.
