  • Nvidia reported in later February about investigating a potential cyber attack affecting some parts of its online business.
  • A hacker group has broken into Nvidia’s data and has already dumped 19 GB of data that includes source code for the GPU drivers.
  • They further demand that the company lift the RTX 3000 models limiter via a software upgrade for the customers.

Semiconductor giant Nvidia reported in late February that it is investigating a potential cyberattack that is altering some parts of its online business. And the hacking group, namely LAPSUS$, has claimed responsibility adding further that they managed to carry out the theft of 1 Terabyte data from the company servers.

PCmag, the computer hardware outlet, highlights that the group is offering to sell the data along with information on unlocking high-end GPUs of Nvidia for cryptocurrency mining. The hackers further claim to have customized software that has the potential of unlocking the company’s lite hash rate limiter for its RTX 3000 series graphics card.

A social media post from the group signifies what they have to offer, which says if someone buys them the LHR, they will provide ways to mess with it without flashing anything. And without flashing anything is equal to big money for any miner developer.

Nvidia introduced the Ethereum hash rate limiters early last year in order to discourage crypto miners from purchasing all of their cards but to leave a few for the gamers. But this effort did not really succeed as the miners bought older cards that had the potential to mine, which intensified the shortage and sent GPU prices higher.

The hacker group demanded that the company lift its limiter for all of the RTX 3000 models via a software update. And has threatened to leak more data if Nvidia does not cooperate. And some of this information consists of details regarding Nvidia’s next-generation graphics cards. They have already got a shot of 19 GB of data that includes the source code for the GPU drivers.

The report further added that the hacker group wants to sell the driver and suggests they could be pretending. And as of now, Nvidia has not responded to their demands and continues to analyze the data break.
