Rose Namajunas is rewarded with a substantial cryptocurrency bonus.
Rose “Thug” Namajunas, the former UFC strawweight champion, has become one of the first notable fighters to get compensated in cryptocurrency for her efforts in the cage.
A bonus of $30K crypto
After a five-round bout with contender Carla Esparza dubbed “Cookie Monster” in which neither fighter did much to engage, Namajunas had her division championship removed from her waist.
The bout might have gone anyway, but Namajunas’ championship was seized after a tight split decision in favor of Cookie Monster during the weigh-in.
While the title may be gone, Namajunas received a $30K cryptocurrency bonus at the conclusion of the event after being voted the best fighter in a recent fan survey by those who weren’t willing to allow the former champion’s previous performance to influence their impressions of the young fighter.
Despite the bonus, Dana White, the UFC’s president, claimed in an interview that he was surprised by the fight’s outcome and that it was “strange” considering the lack of action.
Namajunas isn’t the only one who received a bitcoin reward. Charles Oliveira and ex-Bellator fighter Michael Chandler each received a batch of crypto units valued at about $10,000.
Both fought in a lightweight match that had the crowd shouting from their seats, and Justin Gaethje won a special $20K bitcoin bonus for his spectacular submission victory against Tony Ferguson.
Crypto projects
The crypto incentives are the result of a collaboration between the UFC and Crypto.com, a renowned digital trading platform.
Dana White explained the joint project when it was revealed in mid-April:
