International Criminal Police Organization’s (INTERPOL) Executive Director of Technology and Innovation thinks that the metaverse has a massive potential to change the daily aspects in our lives, and he is not wrong. Experts believe that digital spaces will take over the globe to create a digital twin to Earth. Now, INTERPOL has entered the realm to take charge against cyber criminals.

According to the announcement, the organization took the step due to increasing attacks in cyber spaces and fast adoption rate of the metaverse sector. As the metaverse is growing, so are the number of hackers. Cryptosphere saw the biggest hack of 2022 in the first quarter when North Korean hacker group, Lazarus invaded the network.

Financial damage is not the only problem in the space, A South Korean man was arrested due to sexual harassment in the metaverse. He was forcing children to send naked pictures of themselves. Similarly, a couple of women reported such incidents in the metaverse Mark Zuckerberg created.

First incident was reported during November 2021 when a beta tester was virtually groped by a group of avatars. The team said that she should have used the “safe zone” feature for safety. In another instance, a female researcher was harassed by some men in the Horizon Worlds which left her mental state “disoriented.”

According to the INTERPOL announcement, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has already joined forces with them and other companies like Meta, Microsoft and more. The collaboration is centered around establishing standard rules and regulations in the metaverse. They added that digital spaces will bring malicious acts including data theft, counterfeiting, misinformation, and more with them.

The INTERPOL metaverse will provide training to staff, help in building capacities of employees, enable remote work and more. The organization’s Executive Director of Technology and Innovation says that mateverse will have an enormous impact on the law enforcement sector.

People are still wondering about the precise meaning of metaverse to this date, even Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, is not sure about it. But considering the massive development in virtual spaces, we can say that metaverse is already here, we just don’t know about it. The director also said that “To understand the metaverse, police need to experience it.”

INTERPOL’s entry in the metaverse is really one of the biggest achievements for the law enforcement sector. The international organization will aid in countering the malicious actors prominently in the space.
