  • Metaverse is a concept of interoperable virtual worlds.
  • Several activities, from socialization to productivity are possible in metaverse.

Since the dawn of technology, human kind has evolved to a stage where the digital twin of the earth doesn’t seem far-fetched. Tech giants across the globe are already making their mark either via entering virtual spaces or building them. This will impact almost every aspect of our lives. World Economic Forum (WEF), international non-governmental and lobbying body, thinks that this now nascent concept will have a huge influence on the industry.

Metaverse Need Tech Marvels

According to a WEF article published on January 13, 2022, the metaverse will “change the way we work.” Virtual spaces will have a deep and lasting influence over industry and business. It says that industries are testing digital twins already. For example, ports are using them to trace each container moving on and from the docks. Aerospace companies testing flight simulation before bringing their flying beasts on the ground.

The metaverse will allow the employees to virtually manipulate the factory floor instead of just keeping an overwatch. WEF says that workers will do their tasks from the “safety of their desks,” while controlling the repair robots. This is something straight out of Ironman 3 where Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., simply commands Dum-E and Dum-U to take over any task he asks for.

The article also mentions how metaverse can enhance urban planning. Engineers will roam the city streets without actually having to appear physically on the location. This is possible using extended reality (XR) devices. They can restructure a whole town on their desk, again, similar to how Tony uses Jarvis to create a diorama of Stark Expo, 1974, in Ironman 2.

Moreover, technological advancements like 5G and 6G will enable XR mobility, meanwhile edge and cloud computing will contribute performance optimization of metaverse applications. There are several other aspects that need to be considered if we really want to create a virtual universe that would serve as a digital twin to this earth.

In 2016, Steven Speilberg unveiled through Ready Player One, a movie based on 2011 novel with the same title, how the metaverse will look like. Though the film is set up in a dystopian world where despair and poverty run rampant due to global conflicts, it doesn’t have to be like this in reality. The director covered almost all the aspects required to immerse in a virtual space, from haptic suits to omni treadmills.

The concept appears unfathomable at some point, but so does the internet during its inception. It is only a matter of time until humanity will see this revolutionary concept coming to the mainstream. The only question remains whether it will be fruitful to the extent the people anticipate it to be.
