Meta Platform “CyberDefender” Launched by Hong Kong Police

Cyberdefnder, a new metaverse platform has been launched by the security unit of Hong Kong. The platform has been launched and designed in a way to educate people about the dangers that one can face while using Web3 and the metaverse. 

Cyberdefender Launched by Hong Kong Police 

The Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong police force according to a statement of May 27 has launched a new metaverse platform. The platform “cyber defender” has been launched with the purpose of helping people with the challenges that they may face in the digital age. 

The day it was launched by the Hong Kong police, the same day an event was carried out on the platform called “Exploring the Metaverse”. The event was held in three virtual venues and different crime prevention strategies were discussed during the event. 

While the event was happening, CSTCB’s chief inspector, Mr. Ip Cheuk-yu emphasized how to take caution in the metaverse. He also asked all the attendees to apply the same level of caution that they take while using the internet.

 He further stated that the kind of crimes that happen in cyberspace can also happen in the metaverse as well which include investment frauds, access to systems in an unauthorized manner, stealing, and sexual offenses.  The chief also stated that decentralization will increase the risk of asset theft. 

He added that due to the decentralized nature of digital assets in the Web3 space, it can ramp up cybercrime and cyber criminals targeting endpoint devices such as digital wallets and smart contracts. 

Hong Kong Police’s Efforts in Cyberspace

After a significant increase in cybercrime during the Q1 of 2023 in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong police have started taking initiatives. It plans to improve educational initiatives specifically for the “younger generation”. 

The data revealed that almost 660 cases were reported during Q1 2023 which involved virtual assets. The total no of cases represented almost $570 million which is a 75% increase from the first quarter of 2022. 

Hong Kong police will organize more such public initiatives on different topics on the “CyberDefender” platform. They aim to inform teenagers about the latest happenings in the technological world, potential threats, and the importance of preventing such crimes. 

The initiatives by the Hong Kong police come after the China Metaverse Technology application was launched on May 22 in Nanjing, China’s eastern Jiangsu province. The platform was launched to carry metaverse research and development across the country. 

The Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology leads the innovation platform.
