The era of artificial intelligence (AI) revolution doesn’t seem far. Many companies are going all out to harness the power of this technology and Microsoft is one of those companies. Recently, they struck a multi-billion dollar deal with CoreWeave, a cloud service provider and former Ethereum (ETH) miner. Earlier, CoreWeave partnered with Nvidia and the two companies expanded their collaboration in April 2023.
Microsoft Going Full Force With Artificial Intelligence
According to CNBC, the creator of Windows agreed to pour Billions of dollars into cloud infrastructure enhancement. CoreWeave announced during the GTC conference 2023 that their HGX H100 clusters that are serving companies like NovelAI creators, Anlatan, are live.
The company poured $1 Billion in OpenAI, makers of AI chatbot OpenAI. The application has garnered significant attention since. From research scholars to business personalities, many are using it to enhance their workflows. In March 2023, the tech giant announced the chatbot’s integration in Azure, their cloud computing platform.
President of GPU king, Nvidia, Jensen Huang, said during the GTC conference that they will bring AI to every industry. The company recently announced a partnership between WPP plc, one of the leading advertising agencies, to provide them with AI tools for betterment in operations. The company also revealed their Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) which holds the capacity to create life-like characters in the metaverse.
Microsoft is trying to crack the $70 Billion deal to acquire Activision Blizzard. However, regulators including the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) started a legal battle to block the deal. But recently, the European Union (EU) and some other nations including Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Chile, and more, have approved the deal.
Activision Blizzard CEO, Bobby Kotick, recently appeared in an interview and explained that the company will not be affected even if the deal is not advanced. He said the organization holds $12.6 Billion in cash and will add $3 Billion more as a breakup fee if Microsoft steps back.
AI Apparently Has Begun Showing Its True Colors
Although the abilities AI holds are undoubtedly fascinating, it is proving to be a great disruptor in the employment sector. A discussion between Odd Bits podcast host Tracy Alloway; and Ali Velshi, MSNBC financial journalist, highlights that artificial intelligence has affected jobs across the U.S. for the first time. According to the report, 3,900 individuals lost employment in the nation because of AI.
Tracy said this all comes down to how the policy makers and the society deals with the technology. It is possible that people do not have to work so hard in the distant future showing an increase in productivity, and the probability of people working four days in a week.
However, a few settings might not play out so well with the presence of artificial intelligence. Royal Aeronautical Society highlights the comments of Col. Tucker ‘Cinco’ Hamilton, United States Air Force (USAF) AI test and operations chief. He explained a scenario where an AI-enabled drone tasked to destroy surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites taking commands from an operator might kill him as he, at times, may order the machine to spare the target.
However, the drone is designed to kill and may take the command as a hindrance, leading it to a potential attack on the operator.
As a speech from a famous American activist, Mario Savio, goes “There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part! You can’t even passively take part! And you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels … upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop!”
