The data breach happened in Capital One and they hacked the personal details of about 106 million people in the Canada and U.S. The hacked was aimed to steal the financial services firm Capital One and the news was disclosed by the company a few hours ago.
On Monday, the hacker named Paige Thompson was arrested following her bragging about the news on an online platform. The firm disclosed that the data related to their customer’s names, addresses and mobile numbers of people got stolen, those who applied for the Capital One’s product. The firm confirmed that the hacker wasn’t able to get hold of credit card account number.
This hacking was also recorded as one of the largest breaches in the history of banking. The firm, Capital One is one of the biggest issuers of credit cards in the U.S. and it also has retail banks. The firm stated on Monday revealed that the hacking affected around 100 million people in the U.S. region and around 6 million people in Canada.
The firm also stated that only in the U.S., around 140,000 social security numbers and 80,000 co-joined bank accounts were affected. On the other hand, around 1 million social insurance numbers in Canada related to Capital One customer’s credit cards were affected. The hack was come known by authorities on July 19.
The firm stated that the hack was able to “exploit” a “configuration vulnerability” in the infrastructure of the firm. The hacker also has stolen the user’s credit card scores, balances, payment history, limits, and their numbers. The Capital One said that the chances are thin that the information of users was used in any kind of fraud and they are continued to investigate the matter.
The firm will reach to the people who get affected because of this hack and compensate with providing free service of credit card monitoring and security protection for identity.
The Chairman of the Capital One, Richard Fairbank stated,
“While I am grateful that the perpetrator has been caught, I am deeply sorry for what has happened.” He added, “I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected and I am committed to making it right.”
The company is now compensating with the affected and investigating the matter further. Like this one of the major hacking in history, the authorities are also trying to investigate more about the hacker. Paige Thompson was the earlier software engineer in Seattle Technology Company, 33, got arrested on the charges of Computer fraud and abuse on Monday. The hearing of the case is fixed on August 1.
