Rollup is considered to be the next big thing in smart contract scalability, but even though the idea is there but the conceptualization and making it work is yet to be there. Rollup is a basic approach to scaling open contracts.

The contracts that everyone can see and interact with. In rollup, their arguments and the contract’s terms are written on-chain as call data, but the actual computation and storage of these contracts are done off-chain.

For example, if somebody post-on-chain an assertion “a positive statement” about the contract potential and what it can do like the list of actions taken by the contract, such as payment made, and a cryptographic hash of its state has executed the calls which were already posted on-chain.

We can think of the assertion as “rolling up” all of the results and calls into a single on-chain transaction. The example provides the basic idea of how rollup works by giving assertion word into it, but where it differs is in how they ensure that the assertions are correct.

There are currently three basic approaches

  1. Non-interactive rollup like ZK-Rollup
  2. One round interactive rollup
  3. Multi-round interactive rollup

Arbitrum Rollup is the product of Off-chain Labs and falls under the category of the multi-round interactive rollup. Multi-round interactive allows the contracts to make calls without emulating full on-chain to which it narrows its dispute over the Ethereum global gas limit until it is small enough to resolve cheaply on-chain.

The data written on the chains are known as call data, which stores all the calls to the contract and their data to chain.

On February 12, 2020, Steven Goldfeder of Off-chain Labs announced that Arbitrum rollup is going live on testnet. Testnet is an alternative Bitcoin Blockchain which is solely used for testing and never supposed to possess any value.

Testnet allows developers or bitcoin testers to experiment without worrying about the actual risk. The company is very positive about its first step and aiming to run a successful test and provide more demos for the investors to seek funds and partners to enlarge it into something bigger than Ethereum mainnet and beyond.

Today’s launch was a result of years of research and engineering into the Arbitrum rollup. It already provides full smart contract support and ships with solidity compiler that makes customers to port existing contracts easily or completely starting from scratch by developing new ones.
