The ongoing global health crisis has without a doubt inflicted a huge blow in almost all economies on the planet. With a lot of businesses closing and millions of employees getting laid off, people are left to fend for themselves. Folks over there in the Philippines, however, stumbled upon a way to make ends meet and at the same time learn a bit of crypto.

Enter ‘Axie Infinity’

A budding YouTube channel – Play-To-Earn – recently uploaded an 18-minute clip where it featured a town in the Philippines that makes a living out of an NFT game. “Axie Infinity” is a game developed by SkyMavis which involves the collection of those digital critters known as Axies. It is a decentralized application that is built on the Ethereum platform that utilizes ERC721 tokens.

Coinbase was the first to touch on this topic, and it may well seem that folks from Nueva Ecija’s old capital – Cabanatuan City in the Philippines took notice of the article, and the rest was history.

One of the residents named Art Art admitted that he was a bit skeptical at first to try it out. Nonetheless, he gave it a shot and later on found out that “Axie Infinity’s” the real deal. For the first 15 days of playing the game, Art got his initial payout of $20 (1,000 Philippine Peso). A very minute amount if you’re living in well-developed countries like the U.S. But this goes a long way in that part of the world since the cost of living there is way cheaper.

Oldies are playing it too

It’s not just the young ones who are playing “Axie Infinity.” The mini documentary also featured an old couple who also play the game. According to Lolo (Filipino term for grandpa) Silverio, 75, said that he too plays the game whenever he’s watching over their store. Win or lose, he still plays it. Lola (Filipino term for grandma) Vergie, on the other hand, prays that the DApp won’t go away as they mentioned that the game also helps them with their medical expenses.

“Axie Infinity’s” Head of Growth Jeffrey “Jiho” Zirlin noticed that it’s in the Philippines where they noticed a lot of traction adding thanks to last year’s Coindesk story. Further, he believes that the reason why the game took off was the idea of playing the game to earn a living. Zirlin went on to say that it’s something that resonates with a generation that’s looking for new ways of making money online.
