  • Innovation Zone in the Nevada desert requires self-governed county-level jurisdiction
  • US senators show concern regarding the requirement for such new wings of governance
  • The project proponents touted the economic benefits of it

Innovation Zone in the Nevada desert will turn dreams of a futuristic smart city into reality. Blockchain LLC is creating a zone where users will be able to start from scratch and introduce new uses of their technology. Following the idea, Blockchain LLC had asked the state to allow such corporations to govern on the lands owned by them. Indeed, such governing power will grant such firms control over everything. However, recently the Innovation Zone advocates faced pushback from senators. Indeed, it seems the senators are skeptical to allow firms to govern their lands.

Innovation Zone jurisdiction questioned by senators

The United States lawmakers have raised concerns over the requirement for Innovation Zone governments. Blockchain LLC’s proposed scheme asks for self-governed, county-level jurisdiction dedicated to innovative technologies like blockchain. The proposal has been questioned by Senators. The lawmakers questioned that such ambitious goals could only be realized within a new layer of government.

Blockchain LLC refined the Nevada governor’s idea

According to a local news outlet, the idea of Innovation Zone was first pitched by Steve Sisolak, Nevada’s governor. The governor envisioned the plan to be a cornerstone of his economic development plan.  Notably, the whole idea was to ultimately allow big technology firms to form county-like jurisdiction.

However, further, the idea was refined by the cryptocurrency magnate Blockchain LLC. The firm purchased a giant plot of land in the state’s Storey Country. The crypto firm intended to use the land to create a utopian city. Such a city would leverage blockchain technology for transactions and government functions.

Do we need such a futuristic city?

Mo Denis from Las Vegas, a Democratic legislator, claimed that he agreed to the wider adoption of blockchain technology. However, he believes that the world doesn’t need such an Innovation Zone for now. Moreover, if the idea gets permission it is expected that the existing size of the country will reduce by 40%.

According to Denis, he comprehends that it is a huge thing when it comes from the blockchain perspective. Still, he highlighted that yet he needs to understand how the Innovation Zone is essential.

New wing of government concerns officials

We have observed that Storey County is not opposed to such Innovation Zone development. However, some officials are doubtful about the possibility of a new wing of governance. Clay Mitchell, the county commissioner, said that they are concerned about separate government pieces, as they are well-equipped and positioned to help vet and flesh out such lofty ideals.

The project consists of economic benefits

According to the supporters of the Nevada Innovation Zone, the project contains economic benefits. Labor groups and individuals siding the idea claimed that the project impact could be worth more than $16 billion. Such figures include $7 billion worth of wages and 124k job opportunities. Moreover, the project will help the region position itself as a leader in emerging technologies.
