Tencent CEO’s idea of the metaverse

Pony Ma (Ma Huateng) – Tencent’s CEO – stated that the Metaverse will be a good chance in adding to the progression of the existing industries out there.

The CEO, during Tencent’s earnings call on Wednesday, pointed out a few examples of industries where this technology can be applied on. One of the industries Ma mentioned was the gaming industry. For the uninitiated, Tencent is one of the leaders in developing games, especially for mobile devices. The introduction of Metaverse into gaming would indeed be a game-changer (no pun intended). Ma also took notice of the social media space and business applications as good avenues for Metaverse adding that the latter can tap it as its so-called “growth engine.”

It was at the same event when Ma said, “Anything that makes the virtual world more real and the real world richer with virtual experiences can become part of the metaverse.”

From what Ma mentioned, it looks like for him, the most obvious road leading to the Metaverse is via video games which is Tencent’s biggest cash cow. He stated that there’s a possibility that the introduction of the Metaverse could be injected into “highly interactive games” or through multiple titles that are under a common IP that allows users to develop games.

Metaverse already in motion

That said, reports are suggestive that such ideas are already in motion in some of Tencent’s companies like Discord, “Roblox,” and even Epic Games. The tech giant is not trying to do all the work, but it has supported hundreds of businesses that they believe have this strategic value on them.

Meanwhile, Tencent’s Chief Strategy Officer James Mitchell has revealed the games where they see the Metaverse would flourish. He revealed titles like “Fortnite” “Roblox,” and “Rocket League” could be great vessels for such technology.

As mentioned earlier, Ma also highlighted a social network that’s already “gamified,” not to mention that the one that already backs “more programmable experiences.”

The third one which is the “real-world experience” is also a good path for Metaverse to take provided that it is augmented by both augmented and virtual reality.
