NFT and metaverse are now continuing to attract mainstream audiences. Bigger brands like Pepsi, Adidas, and Nike are all trying to not miss out and stepping in the ecosystem to launch or acquire some kind of Non-Fungible Tokens. Recently, the first Wikipedia edit NFT has been sold for $750k at Christie’s auction hype. Following the craze for these crypto collectibles, Vodafone, the British telecom firm has auctioned the historic 15 character long first SMS “Merry Christmas”. Notably, the auction will be made for charity, as the firm seeks to help the displaced refugees across the globe.

British telco giant auctions world’s first SMS NFT

Vodafone, the british telecom giant will auction the world’s first Short Message Service (SMS). Notably, the auction will be held on December 21, 2021. The SMS that reads “Merry Christmas” was sent 29 years ago over the Voda network on December 3rd, 1992, and was received by Richard Jarvis, an employee at the time.

The incredible historic SMS is ready to be auctioned as an NFT in a one-off sale conducted by the Aguttes Auction House in France. According to a Romanian news outlet Ziarul Financiar, by auctioning the Non-Fungible Token, the telecom firm intends to redirect the earnings to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees which is the UN for Refugee Agency. Notably, the agency aims to help the forcibly displaced people.

Exclusive ownership of world’s first SMS

Ziarul Financiar, also highlighted an advertisement banner to promote the NFT sale. The banner translates to “Merry Christmas”, the world’s first SMS. According to the news outlet, the sale of the digital collectible will take place this Tuesday, through an online auction wherein the participants can place bids using ETH cryptocurrency. Hence the highest bidder of the auction will get the ownership of the communication protocol that was used to transmit the world’s first short message.

Additionally, the SMS’s glory, it took about nine years for other networks to have the telco giant’s ability to transmit and receive such short message services.

NFTs catalyzed crypto mainstream adoption

The crypto collectibles ecosystem has catalyzed digital asset’s mainstream adoption as corporations find its utility within existing business models. Just last week, sportswear manufacturer Adidas announced the launch of an “Into the Metaverse” NFT collection. Following the entry of brands and increasing count of enthusiasts, it seems NFTs signals strong interest towards it. The latest move of minting the world’s first SMS by Vodafone is another example that the collectibles’ ability to tokenize would preserve our history digitally.
