  • According to the DAO fundraising platform Juicebox, AssangeDAO has raised over 14,329 ETH, or around $44.8 million, since its launch on February 3.
  • AssangeDAO’s efforts are attracting major contributions, including ten Ethereum tokens ($31,000) from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
  • The idea for AssangeDAO is to bid on a one-of-a-kind NFT created by celebrated digital artist Pak, who worked with Julian Assange on the “Censored” collection.

The AssangeDAO, whose purpose is to release Julian Assange, has raised more money in four days than the now-defunct ConstitutionDAO, which was founded last year to bid on a rare copy of the United States Constitution.

The Assange NFT is working with actual figures

The origins of AssangeDAO may be traced back to a Telegram group in mid-December, on the day the US government won its appeal of a UK court order that prevented Assange’s extradition. According to the official website, “If Assange is extradited to the United States, he risks 175 years in prison for disclosing true information.”

“The Assange NFT is working with actual figures. It appears to be a protest vote against the White House’s violation of the Espionage Act “Over the weekend, legendary whistleblower Edward Snowden tweeted about the tidal wave of Web 3 financial support for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

AssangeDAO, which comprises members of the Assange family, was founded on December 10 in response to a U.K. court’s decision to overturn an order that banned Assange’s extradition to the United States. The AssangeDAO JUSTICE governance token is distributed to those who donate ETH to the DAO, which runs on the Ethereum network. Those tokens now have little actual value.

The idea for AssangeDAO is to bid on a one-of-a-kind NFT created by celebrated digital artist Pak, who worked with Julian Assange on the “Censored” collection. The sale proceeds will go to the Wau Holland Foundation for Assange’s legal defense.

The FreeRossDAO, which raised $12 million to release Ross Ulbricht, founder of the dark web marketplace Silk Road, inspired the idea.

Assange has been imprisoned in London’s Belmarsh prison for the past three years. He had previously spent nearly seven years in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he had been granted shelter.

Collective of cypherpunks

AssangeDAO is a “collective of cypherpunks” attempting to fund ETH in exchange for JUSTICE governance tokens.

The comparison was made in terms of ETH, which was substantially more expensive in November. ConstitutionDAO had raised approximately $49 million at the time.

These will be used to bid on “Censored,” a nonfungible token collection created by digital artist Pak in partnership with Julian Assange.

The revenues of the sale will go to Assange’s defense fund, which will be used for “legal fees and lobbying to raise awareness about Julian’s extradition case.”
