According to a recent Bloomberg story, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has postponed a decision on whether crypto mining business Greenidge Generation may continue to utilize its power plant near Dresden for bitcoin mining.

The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation now will make its decision by the end of March.

The Environmental Debate In New York

The judgment is now due by March 31, two months later than scheduled, according to the newspaper. According to a representative for the NYSDEC, the delay will allow the agency to finish its evaluation with public input. In a comprehensive letter dated December 2, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) questioned Greenidge Generation’s (GREE) bitcoin mining plant in New York for its environmental impact.

Six more crypto miners were targeted by the senator, who questioned their energy consumption. Greenidge said on January 16 that its bitcoin mining operations in Dresden had been temporarily paused the day before due to higher electricity demand induced by recent cold weather. This was done to supply the New York Independent System Operator with all of its electrical generation capability. Last year, the miner requested to renew its licenses for the facility for the first time since it began powering bitcoin mining operations.

Could More Delays Be Caused By Extreme Weather?

Many people and ecological groups have been vocal in their opposition to cryptocurrency mining throughout the years. According to a public statement released earlier this month by the state’s power grid operator, the state’s electricity grid could encounter issues in the years 2021-2030, including increasing demand prompted by severe weather and delays in planned projects. Reporters, experts, and others offered their perspectives on how things are going, as well as the impact on crypto’s evolution and the ecosystem in which it functions.

Governor Hochul is taking bold, nation-leading actions to confront climate change head-on, and DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) is actively reviewing proposals concerning the role of cryptocurrency mining in New York’s energy landscape, particularly in light of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, said spokesperson Madia Coleman. Coleman is referring to the state’s climate law, which requires drastic reductions in emissions within the next three decades. Liz Moran, a policy advocate, shared her opinions on the bill and how this will affect things in the future. An embargo on fossil fuels is a sensible first step, but we’d rather see the state go even further and assess the industry’s overall environmental risks.

In its comprehensive reliability plan (CRP), the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) also stated that its energy infrastructure is intended to meet all relevant reliability standards during typical weather circumstances. We’ll learn more about the measure as time goes on, including whether it will cause delayed or outright bans on fossil fuels. mining of cryptocurrencies
