Almost half of the world population consists of women, but there is barely their count in the business world, especially in the crypto industry; why?

International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March 2022, and this year, it got the theme of #BreakTheBias. On occasion, some women have asked about their experiences in Web 3 and crypto space and advice. They have asked about the barriers to entering the field and role models who inspired them.

Talking about thresholds for women to face while considering careers in crypto space, cofounder of Istanbul Blockchain Women Association, Dr. Cagla Gul Senkardes, gave a straightforward answer, Bias. She also used to be a lecturer at Istanbul Bilgi University, so she took an academic point of view to support his take. Senkardes sees gender bias and ideologies formed through cultural practices put in the context of cryptofeminism.

In her words, technical languages have a masculine construction and symbolism that carries inclusiveness to the extent that they are far from skills and competence. So she insisted on the cryptofeminism debate against Crypto’s such male-dominated culture.

When asked Jackie Rose about it, she expressed similar sentiments about it. Rose is Head of Institutional Business Development at Blockchain.com. She said that confusing linguistic approaches or buzzwords like meme coin or web 3 sound cryptic enough, hence preventing someone from further investigating. Rose also noted since people in the US have access to traditional banking, they often consider Crypto more likely than gambling but not as investing. On asking about female roles in the industry, she said that Crypto is a welcoming space where her female colleagues have become invaluable resources.

One of the answers to the question put simplistically was by Daniela Henao Moreno, who said that possible barriers even lack access to jobs. Those job postings in Crypto are made known via Telegram or such platforms or word of mouth instead of being posted on popular job portals or employment sites.

Some other thoughts also added on this matter, as Aurore Galves said that whenever women present, they are being showcased as something to reassure investors and increase their confidence in a project. The worst part is that pretending to be an expert is more complex than legitimately being an expert in this environment. Galves is cofounder of a French development Agency Leonod, specializing in cryptography and distributed technologies.

Apart from this, Wengie, the founder of Nyan Heros NFT game, has a comparatively positive outlook, especially on NFT. She said that in this space, creators had been rewarded for their work belonging to almost every other field, from culture to art and creativity. Wengie believed that more and more women are taking control of their financial education and learning about Crypto, especially from an investment point of view.
