  • From entering Bitcoin in 2013 to losing interest and then again getting active in the industry, this cool and efficient Bitcoin miner is saving a lot of costs by his mining setup.
  • He kept his office nice and warm with an S9, further discovered a new strategy during a trip and mined Bitcoin as well as kept the caravan warm.
  • More the home mining setups, the better, encourages Michael Schmid

In a recent interview, the crypto miner and enthusiast Michael Schmid talked about how he came into the crypto industry in the year 2013 with Bitcoin, when he installed Bitcoin core, then mined a few BTC and bought a few from MtGox. And after the MtGox hack, he lost his Bitcoin as well as his interest in the industry.

And in the year 2020, he got pretty active again as he got concerned about the endless money printing. He highlighted that with that, he found he does not agree at all with the fiat money and believes that Bitcoin should be the global reserve currency and a store of value.

Schmid has a very curious and studious mind, he studied all the foundations of the crypto industry all over again which he left years ago, he learned about ASICs, Antminers, and all that has taken place in the last years in the crypto industry.

According to him, it makes much more sense to replace a resistive heater with a Bitcoin miner, as both things would turn electricity into heat, while the Bitcoin miner also generates Bitcoin.

While Schmid was working in an office, he bought an S9 from a friend and used the miner rather than a space heater to heat the office that worked perfectly. He would then solve valid Bitcoin blocks and reap the rewards along with keeping his office warm and nice. Apart from being a miner, he also enjoys traveling across America. And during a trip with his airstream, there were some issues with the heating unit. And thereby Schmid thought he could use the S9 heater to heat the airstream as a fallback situation.

But he further thought about how he could build the system, because space is at a premium in an Airstream and if the S9 were to be placed inside the camper it would easily overheat up the airstream. And hence he came up with an idea to keep it in a box outside and route the warm air into the airstream.

He got the airstream temperature under 90F one day when the heater was running while it should not. And the caravan was kept warm while mining Bitcoin, which was powered by Solar panels on the roof and free campsite electricity.

This project worked as a nice side Bitcoin project. Nonetheless, it has solved the issue of intermittent heat, but Schmid also saves around 50% of the propane costs.

For all the aspiring miners, this miner with a cool tactic shared, he encourages anybody to play with home mining and that he believes one of the most important things with bitcoin is not only the decentralization of coins but also the mining infrastructure.
