  • Metaverse is a virtual world, where players are able to do activities similar to their real lives. It can be considered as a replica of the real world.
  • MMO games are the initial examples of metaverses. Players go for quests, battle and loots, but a majority of gaming experience is regarding community and social interaction.
  • In spite of their broader membership, livelihood of these virtual realms can be precarious. Over the years, several digital spaces were taken offline.

What is Metaverse?

Metaverse can be considered as a replica of a tangible world, which can be accessed through AR, VR, MR techs. Folks can do real life activities in this realm similar to the real world.

What makes it more interesting is that, in a metaverse, sky’s the limit for our imagination and we can add something in this realm, which we can only imagine to add in the actual world.

A New World

No matter how we exhibit the expressions that solitude remains the best of concepts that humans can experience, but deep down we all know that a human is a social animal, and they cannot stay alone for longer periods of time, and need to interact with each other.

As Aristotle said “whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god.”

Well, I can’t speak for others but I am not either of them.

Whether it is a strategy based game like Age of Empires or a First Person Shooter Like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Phantoms, people use these MMO games more for socialization and making connections instead of just playing them for fun.

Players in these MMO metaverses have made many connections, some short term, some long term, and even got along outside this digital realm after getting associated while playing the game.

Extinction Of Digital Realms Of Metaverse

In spite of their wide membership, livelihood of these virtual realms can be precarious. Over the years, organizations have pulled the plug from various digital social spaces.

There is even a genre of YouTube videos committed to the final moments of an MMO, generally involving a crowdbase of amazing avatars waving goodbye to each other for good.

Dying MMO Jam host Salem Hughes states that, after a quarter of a century of people being online, seeing some type of virtual extinction or ruin  is another universal experience.

Pulling a plug from a single player offline game is very different, as folks can download it again, and play it whenever they want. Like the campaign mode in Call of Duty.

But in the case of an MMO metaverse, if a plug is pulled, everything is turned into “digital ashes.” Every connection, virtual lands, avatars, any payments made by the players. ALL GONE !!

You made a connection in an MMO metaverse, well, it is sad to say, but that person is gone, of course, unless you peeps are connected on some other platform like Discord or maybe better, in real life.

Saying goodbye is an element of human experience. I know you have done it digitally, more than you think. Like when you were playing Age of Empires or Ghost Recon Phantoms, which have been inactive for past few years, and they are now nothing but a virtual Ghost Town.

Dying MMO host, Ellen Dex stated to a news website that, setting a game in Dying MMO felt like a healing, a bittersweet goodbye to the digital childhood, and an acknowledgement that folks and humanity change, which he wanted to mourn and celebrate at the same time.
