Sturgeon County may have permitted cryptocurrency mining on the premises of gas stations later this year, now that the county council has passed new regulations governing them. Sturgeon County council voted 6-1 (Councilman Jason Berry opposed) to amend the county’s land-use bylaw to include new requirements for data processing businesses.
Generate $19,740 In Tax Revenue Per Year

Cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, are cryptographic currencies that may be mined by having computer systems do complicated and infrequently power-intensive calculations. According to Martyn Bell, the famed County programme lead for current planning, Bitcoin alone consumes as much energy as the Netherlands.
MAGA Vitality has indicated that each of its mines will consume 10 MW of electricity and employ four people, according to Bell. Every website is expected to generate $19,740 in tax revenue per year. Council had previously heard that in 2020, the company Hyperlink World set up an unlicensed data processing facility on a MAGA-owned web domain near Greystone Manor, which generated unacceptable levels of noise while in operation.
During a public hearing on the bylaw in February, Greystone Manor Residents Association president Jeff Kocuipchuk compared the Hyperlink World operation to the sound of a number of idling Boeing 737s, and called on council to require all knowledge processing services with energy crops to maintain a minimum distance of 1,500 meters from any house. Administration indicated in its written assessment that such a setback would make any such institution impossible to set up in Sturgeon County. Alternatively, such services should be kept 1,500 meters away from homes unless they have a sound evaluation and mitigation strategy in place.
Districts Capped At 5 Years
In agricultural, useful resource extraction, industrial, and public utility districts, the bylaw makes knowledge processing services a discretionary use (i.e., subject to more scrutiny from a development officer), with permits for services in several of these districts capped at 5 years. The power’s appearance and landscaping need also be approved by the County. Residents were shocked when they learned of the Hyperlink World operation, according to Coun. Kristin Toms, and angry that the County had no legal means to intervene.

Berry noted in an interview that he opposes the new bylaw due to concerns about the noise generated by these websites.
