Fort Worth mayor Mattie Parker and the city of Fort Worth announced on Tuesday that the city is now the first in the United States to mine bitcoin.

The city of Fort Worth has collaborated with the Texas Blockchain Council to begin crypto mining, according to the release.

With three ASIC machines, the city of Fort Worth has begun mining bitcoins 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Fort Worth is where the future begins”

The city of Fort Worth in Texas has begun mining bitcoin 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the climate-controlled Information Technology Solutions Department Data Center at Fort Worth City Hall. The city government and mayor Mattie Parker made the announcement.

The miners will be housed privately, according to Fort Worth government officials, in order to reduce security risks.

In a statement to Bitcoin.com News, Parker said, “With blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies transforming the financial landscape, we aim to transform Fort Worth into a tech-friendly community.”

“Today, with the help and support of the Texas Blockchain Council, we’re taking a modest step into that world while delivering a large message: Fort Worth is where the future begins.”

The Bitmain-brand S9 bitcoin mining machines were provided by the Texas Blockchain Council, according to Fort Worth. The Texas Blockchain Council contributed three ASIC rigs, and the city hopes to “review the program” if it “achieves the aims of appropriately assessing and implementing a municipal bitcoin mining program.”

The mining industry is slowly evolving

The three ASICs in Fort Worth will utilize the same amount of energy as a vacuum cleaner.

Fort Worth’s decision comes at a time when US bureaucrats and authorities are concerned about bitcoin mining, and some lawmakers have proposed legislation (NY-A.7389C / S.6486C.) to put a stop to it.

Despite the scrutiny, the crypto mining business has gotten significantly more efficient and has had a much lower environmental impact over the previous year.

According to a recent report provided by the Bitcoin Mining Council, Bitcoin’s energy usage decreased by 25% in the first quarter of this year.

The three machines will consume the “same amount of energy as a domestic vacuum cleaner,” according to studies conducted by the city of Forth Worth.
