Shattering NFTs
Several folks believe that NFTs are the future of virtual ownership, other forecasts the cryptocurrency bubble will pop and NFTs will be wiped off the face of this sector. What’s uncontestable, though, is that the space is crawling with fraudsters everywhere. Among the recent to fall for such frauds is Seth Green, a comedian and actor.
Seth Green made an announcement on Tuesday, taking to Twitter that 4 of his precious NFTs got snatched from his digital wallet. This involved a Doodle NFT ($28,000), couple of Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs ($40,000 a piece) and a Bored Ape Yacht Club ($200,000). Someone afterwards acquired that stolen NFT for $268,000 eventually.
Seth Green stated that he got phished by fraudsters and had 4 NFT stolen. He requested folks not to purchase or trade while he worked to resolve the issue.
In a subsequent Tweet, Seth Green stated that he was trying to take over an NFT — a Gutter Clone, a Gutter Cats spinoff — and linked his virtual wallet to the website, which eventually revealed to be a fraud.
Decentralization Has Its Drawbacks Too
As NFTs and cryptocurrency are not centralized authority which can reverse transactions — which is by model, the whole point of blockchain tech is decentralization — victims of such frauds have restricted recourse in such scenarios. The largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea, has labeled the theft NFTs as “suspicious” and halts anyone from making offers to get their hands on them.
Web3 gaming organization Animoca Brands co-founder, Yat Siu, pointed out in a Twitter thread that the best step to take in such scenarios is to report to the Police or FBI as phishing is kind of a fraud, and to publicize the theft on an open forum.
Seth Green has made investment in Web3 culture in an expansive NFT portfolio. Around $250,000 worth of Non Fungible Tokens are there remaining in his wallet after the incident.
