  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has talked about the possible date of the Merge.
  • He signifies that it might be executed in August but the risk of delays also hovers around the major upgrade.
  • As users are looking forward to this big step by the network, it is to see when exactly it comes alive.

August, September, Or October? Let’s See!

Ethereum Co-founder Vitalik Buterin very recently highlighted his views at the Shanghai Web 3.0 Developer Summit about the long-awaited Ethereum transition to the Proof-of-Stake model. The Merge is expected to go live on Ethereum’s testnet Ropsten on June 8, 2022, i.e. just around fifteen days to go.

Buterin signified during the summit that the transition is going to be a major test for the whole Ethereum ecosystem. And that this will be larger than any of the tests that they have done before. He emphasized that this is taking a large existing test network with a lot of applications with proof-of-work (PoW), and moving to the PoS.

Buterin also confirmed that the Merge would be implemented by August as Preston Van Loon, the ETH software developer highlighted the same at the Permissionless conference. Apart from confirming about August, there was a hint of delays in his statements.

According to him, If there are no problems then the merge will happen in August, but of course, there is always a risk of problems. And there is also a risk of delays. Hence, September is possible and October is possible as well.

After the London upgrade, The Merge is going to be the primary upgrade in the vast Ethereum network. The London upgrade implemented the ETH’s burn mechanism. And following this one, ETH is planning to implement The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and at last The Splurge.

The Surge would focus on facilitating the enhancement of improving scaling by leveraging zero-knowledge rollups (ZK-rollups) through sharding techniques.

Whereas, Ethereum’s The Verge transition would apply Verkle trees to achieve statelessness by utilizing the Merkle proof upgrade.

The network’s roadmap highlights that the Purge will add an EVM simplification track and eliminate historical data and technical debt. And the Splurge would focus on miscellaneous but essential extras.

Ethereum’s upgrade has been long anticipated by the users and crypto enthusiasts, but the history is proof that no major change has come easy. Hence, it is to look forward if the transition would be delayed or can it come alive on time.
