The Metaverse hype that we hear all day can soon turn into a reality.

On Tuesday, Microsoft declared that Kawasaki is a new client for its “industrial metaverse.”  Don’t be confused! Let us explain with the “industrial metaverse,” they mean factory floor workers will wear HoloLens headsets and be helping with the production, management, and repairing of supply chains. It will use the headsets to help build robots.

Launched in 2016, Hololens offers an augmented reality experience. In Microsoft’s case, it will help workers and managers develop products more quickly and efficiently.

The concept behind the “industrial metaverse” of Microsoft is to create a “digital twin” of a workspace to speed up processes such as manufacturing lines in mind.

Let’s understand this through an example. HoloLens can be used for communicating with workers online in case of damage instead of calling a repair person. Using virtual cues, workers can guide through the repair process.

Microsoft proposes another use-case of HoloLens, which is that it can be used in ramping up new production for combating supply chain problems.

Kawasaki joins Heinz, which recently revealed that it had made the use of the Microsoft industrial metaverse in ketchup factories and Boeing as manufacturing partners.

For some people, all this might look like a joke, but it is something that Microsoft’s customers have been demanding since the buzz around the Metaverse started.

Microsoft’s corporate vice president of mixed reality,  Jessica Hawk, in a CNBC interview, said that the industrial Metaverse is a trailer of what today’s technology can achieve today before it goes on to offer a fully-immersive experience in the future.

Hawk further explained that it is why we are experiencing a lot of energy in that space. Hawk believes that having a technological solution for the real-world problems that companies are going through is highly impactful as it helps in unblocking the supply chain challenge.

The growing business of Microsoft gives us a glimpse of where we stand with the Metaverse. Today, there are more use-cases of virtual reality present in business-related applications than for the average consumer.

Microsoft has a strong start since it has actually started selling mixed reality technology to companies today, at the same time giving developers tools to create their own metaverse experience.
