- Zilliqa announces web 3 gaming console
- It will include an in-built crypto wallet and mining capability
- The inaugural game will be a First Person Shooter
Zilliqa, the ‘world’s first sharding-based blockchain network,’ will launch a gaming console that supports web 3 capabilities early next year.
A prototype was unveiled recently. All specifications have not been revealed yet. The prototype includes the standard HDMI port, USB-3, USB-C ports, and Ethernet. The console will have in-built web 3.0 capability, which means users will be able to access crypto wallets and mine crypto.
The research phase in the development of the console was 6 months long. Zilliqa wants to integrate web 3.0 aspects, like crypto wallets, and mining capability, into a gaming ecosystem. Zilliqa tokens (ZIL) can be earned via in-game tasks or missions. Of course, in-built mining capability means that players will be able to mine ZILs.
Zilliqa has partnered with XBorg, a Web 3 esports company. The X.borg community will have beta access to Zilliqa’s gaming hub during the testing phase. Two games will be launched with the console, one of which is a First Person Shooter or FPS – ‘WEB3WAR’
On September 12th, on its blog, Zilliqa published a report titled ‘Web3 Gaming in 2022 and Beyond’. If the report is to go by, Zilliqa would try to address the disadvantages of web 2.0 gaming and not just provide a new gaming console. The report explained how traditional web 2 games were restrictive and did not deter gamers from trading in-game items in the black market.
The revenue potential of commingling web 3 and gaming is high; however, it depends on the strength of the in-game token or currency. Making web 3 accessible through a gaming console may increase crypto adoption while onboarding more players.
Traditional gaming ecosystems are like ‘walled gardens’ where ‘player-to-player trade is not possible, which allows them to capture 100% of the revenue. It is different when players can trade with other players.
Web 3 gaming can enable players to – truly – own and sell items. Essentially, all player items will be Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs). NFTs may sound ridiculous in art. However, the potential of NFTs in gaming is a different story.
