Human Eyes To Become a Key to Enter Metaverse

Meta has released its Meta Quest Pro in the market and users cannot keep calm. But the company has a fierce rival chasing them from behind which may use the element of surprise to get ahead in the race. Apple was supposed to release its VR headset during the WorldWide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022, but delayed it due to some technical issues. Now rumors regarding an eye scan feature in the device are circulating the market.

According to the reports, the much anticipated headgear will scan the iris to collect the biometric information. The feature focuses on doing stuff like making payments, logging in to the account, accessing the applications easier. It will easily allow the users to switch their profiles in digital spaces. It will be like a family sharing multiple screens on a Netflix account.

Meta Quest Pro shares a similar feature. The headset comes with 5 in-built cams to track eye movement and facial expression. Mark Zuckerberg said that it will help in making their digital avatars better in future. But this has raised data privacy concerns following the history of the organization. The company offered user data without their consent during the 2010s.

The event taught them that they are not using the product, they are the product. Although Apple does not have any history regarding such cases, they were involved in a lawsuit against Epic Games following their monopolistic practices in the market. Apple removed Fortnite from the play store after Epic Games redirected in-game payments to additional sources.

With the rise of metaverse, the VR market will boom as the headgears will serve as a gateway to enter virtual spaces. According to the latest data, the sector generated 12 Billion USD, VR hardware market 7.9 Billion USD and VR gaming market produced 1.9 Billion USD in 2022. Apart from this, the AR/VR/XR industry combinely generated 28 Billion USD in revenues this year.

It is estimated that this sector will grow to become a 250 Billion USD industry by 2028. Major tech companies are already working on digital spaces including Epic Games, Microsoft, Nvidia, Tencent and more. Brendan Greene, creator of PUBG, said he is working on a large-scale metaverse dubbed “Project Artemis.”

Though the metaverse is yet to go mainstream, several people have already entered the space. Games like The Sandbox and Decentraland allow the users to create and monetize their content on the platform. Recently, an 18-year old created a replica of the entire universe in Minecraft, a glimpse at what we can do in virtual worlds.
