  • Metaverse is witnessing increasing use cases everyday.
  • Technology required to access the metaverse isn’t yet available to a majority.
  • Scholars in Hiroshima show utilities of the metaverse in education.

The global metaverse industry is expected to become a $8 Trillion to $13 Trillion market by 2030. This would take a lot of investment injection from the companies worldwide. Moreover, nations from different corners of the world including Dubai, Seoul and more have begun to advance towards virtual spaces. Recently, a local news source in Japan reported that people have started seeing use cases in Hiroshima’s educational sector.

Metaverse is More “Class” Than an Online Class

According to Chugoku Shimbun, a Hiroshima-based local newspaper, the metaverse can help absent students from the school. One of them talked to the agency and explained that the metaverse program helped her eliminate mental issues she developed while away from the school. The report also highlighted that virtual spaces can remove the psychological barriers people face while socializing in real life.

A group of 8 Hiroshima Institute of Technology (HIT) students took a selfie in the metaverse environment. They socialized using digital avatars of themselves via VR headsets. Students believe that the technology can eliminate constraints to socializing like people’s background or their looks.

Another use case was presented by a Hiroshima-based university professor who took some classes in the metaverse. The virtual seminar allowed the students to discuss the technology’s utility. An attendee explained that the event was better than an online class considering the sense of immersion there. People can actually feel human presence in the environment.

This shows that metaverse is slowly spreading its roots worldwide. However, it still lacks the necessary technology to access virtual worlds. Meta and HTC have already released their headgears — Meta Quest Pro and Vive. While HTC’s Vive was launched with a reasonable price tag, Meta’s headset comes along with a price really unattractive to the users.

Many are even skeptical about the concept as there’s no precise definition to what metaverse actually is. The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently published an article where the organization explained how the metaverse is useful in various industries.

South Korea launched a digital twin of Seoul this year. The government said that the initiative will help users to explore the city with a different perspective. The Dubai government revealed their metaverse strategy in July 2022 and said that it will open up employment opportunities for the citizens.

People may not realize it, but they are already accessing the metaverse, just not in a way they want it to.
