Kaspersky has released data regarding the environmental impact of blocking crypto miners. The anti-virus developer stopped over 200 million attempts at illegal crypto mining. In this process almost 3000 tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere in 2022 were prevented.

Crypto mining is the method of validating the processed transaction and minting a new token in exchange for validating the blocks and transaction. As per Kaspersky, Bitcoin generation requires as much energy as Sweden consumes annually. Increasing power prices are believed to fuel illegal mining and crypto-jacking.

Kaspersky introduced a unique methodology in 2019 that enables users and businesses to assess the consequences of illegal mining on the environment. In 2022 Kaspersky prevented 202,540,954 attempts by hijackers to use other devices to mine cryptocurrencies. By preventing malicious activities, the anti-virus developer saved up to 3000 tonnes of greenhouse gas(CO2) emissions.

What is Cryptojacking?

Kaspersky defined Cryptojacking as an illegal activity where cybercriminals secretly use the computational power of computers of victims to mint new tokens. Smartphones, personal computers, tablets, and even servers of unsuspecting individuals and institutions can be compromised and used for mining cryptocurrency.

A cryptojacker first plants malware in the victim’s device and then accesses it to exploit the device’s computational power. Primarily, this planted malware performs its task in the background of a functional computer. Cryptojacking consumes massive energy, lowering the targeted device’s processing abilities.

Crypto Phishing Rose Over 40% in 2022

Earlier on April 22, 2023, TheCoinRepublic reported that Kaspersky disclosed that Crypto phishing has become rapidly popular, and its growth rate saw a hike of 40% compared to the phishing scams in 2021.

In Kaspersky’s 2022 survey, every single investor among seven was impacted by crypto scams. Anti-virus developers argue that crypto is still the priority for scammers to quickly become wealthy by robbing someone’s life savings.

Kaspersky is a Russian computer and mobile security service provider. It develops anti-virus software for personal computers and mobile phones. According to Kaspersky, in 2022, the total number of crypto phishing scams was 5,040,520, less than the number of scams in 2021.
