CEO of Twitter and Tesla, Elon Musk, has recently made a bold statement regarding his contribution to Open AI. During an interview with CNBC, he claimed that Open AI wouldn’t have existed without his initial investment. Musk has claimed that he invested north of $50 million in Open AI, although he could not recall the exact amount. Open AI was the company that was responsible for publicly launching Chat GPT, the famous AI language model. Since its introduction, it has grasped the world’s attention by becoming the central topic of discussion in multiple channels.

The detailed discussion behind Elon Musk’s involvement with Open AI

Based on the recent statements by Elon Musk, he was one of the co-founders of Open AI since December 2015 alongside popular figures like Sam Altman, Greg, Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, and Wojciech Zaremba. Elon Musk has claimed praise for hiring many of the  capable scientists and engineers who worked on Open AI. Among them, Ilya Sutskever was specifically praised by Musk for being responsible for the success of Open AI.

Open AI is an open-source software that is freely available for everyone to use and modify depending on their needs. The source code of this platform is public, while some old heavyweights like Google use a closed-source model.

Elon Musk revealed that he had long, meaningful conversations with Larry Page, the co-founder of Google. He warned Page about AI’s potential rise in the coming years in all those talks. However, Page has maintained a casual attitude regarding AI.

Open AI is quickly transforming into one of those closed-source platforms like Google. This has made Musk wonder about the future of Open AI as it would become mainly profit-driven rather than attuned to serve people’s needs.

Elon Musk’s Plea to stall AI’s development proceedings

Google, one of the biggest companies, has continued to influence the market even after the recent rout of Open AI. Musk has continued to warn Open AI’s top management about restricting Microsoft’s involvement with them. If not done adequately, AI models could soon become a questionable platform.

Musk believes that AI development will probably make human life more manageable. However, he also notes the slight possibility that it could adversely affect humanity.

Due to the rise  of such different issues across AI development and its implementation, Elon Musk has convinced Steve Wozniak, a significant figure in the tech industry, to sign an urgent letter for pausing AI development until its potential is more clarified.

Conclusion

While there are many possible uses for AI technology, it could also have significant adverse effects on humanity.  While Elon Musk has been heavily involved with Open AI, he is concerned about it becoming a closed-source platform. He also advocates stalling the development of AI until its potential risks and benefits are clear.
