- 1 Virtual Reality (VR) headsets will make people socially inactive, says Jack Dorsey.
- 2 Apple released its VR headset, while Meta is all set to launch its headset soon.
The Twitter Co-founder, Jack Dorsey, showed his concern regarding virtual reality headsets (VR). He is worried, saying that it will turn people into couch surfers. Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3 will make people less active at work and take their productivity levels down.
In an interview on the podcast titled “Breaking Points”, he said that he is worried about a society that will distance itself from people and friends due to engrossment in virtual reality headsets.
Dorsey stated that he is concerned as society is moving towards the future where people are dehumanized and living in an imaginary world. He compared the situation with the 2008 film “WALL-E”, which showed how people spent their time with mobiles staring blankly at their virtual screens.
He added that this is the future we are moving towards with everyone sitting on the couch and sipping food through straws with constant 24/7 entertainment.
Meta Highlights its Vision of Activeness with VR
Two big companies are joining the battle of virtual reality headsets. Apple has already released Vision Pro, with a raging price of $3,499. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook has announced this device to be a spatial computer that will encourage virtual meetings, gaming, and facilitate interactive sporting events.
Meta is another company which is in que of launching its VR headsets. Mark Zuckerberg in a meeting with his company’s employees said that every demo Apple showed was a person sitting on a couch by themself, but this is not what he wants.
He emphasizes his vision with the company’s virtual reality headset to be more active. His approach to the metaverse is inherently social and focused on keeping the user’s activity in mind. It is not just entertainment. Even the price of the meta VR is very reasonable as compared to the Apple one. The headset will start at a price of $499.
Exceptional for Gaming: VR Headsets
Jack Dosey’s remarks came days after the remark of Mark Zuckerberg. He said that VR headsets are exceptional for gaming as compared to phones and computers. So, they will pose as the obvious choice.
He added that he is doubtful about the benefits of the virtual reality headsets. Though it is an advanced technology, it has some demerits like social distancing. He warned that we are moving towards a VR-obsessed society which will harm us by increasing de-socialization.
The former Twitter co-founder raised his concern associated with virtual reality that it will distance people from one another. Precisely, his statement means that VR will turn all into lazy blobs who avoid giving time to the society.
