ChatGPT’s massive success brought OpenAI among major frontrunners in the tech domain. With its CEO touring different countries and meeting the who’s who of politics, it seemed that the company indeed has a great future. Now, the course may still seem promising, but the company has hit a roadblock recently.

Is the Setback Significant?

As per the report released by SimilarWeb, the global traffic and unique visitors on the OpenAI website experienced a slump of 10% and 6% respectively. The figures debased the perception held by many that OpenAI can challenge Google’s hegemony. Notably, the number of visitors from the United States also decelerated during the last month.

However, ChatGPT still hosts a higher number of visitors than Microsoft’s Bing, Character.AI, and AI Chatbot. On the other hand, Character.AI registered a little uptick in its monthly visits recently. But apparently, OpenAI’s team and stakeholders don’t seem very concerned about this development.

SimilarWeb’s report also points out that ChatGPT functions as a lead generator for OpenAI. The latter launched the former as a demonstration that took the world by storm in a flash. Since the launch of the service, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has been appealing for favorable regulations.

It is because many universities, organizations, and nations banned the usage of ChatGPT due to various insecurities. On top of that, a faction started associating technology with dystopian sci-fi scenarios. According to them, artificial intelligence could bring doomsday which has been the central theme of many cyberpunks.

Recently, a number of technocrats also signed a pact stating they won’t let technology become a danger to the human race. But OpenAI seemed to be doing fine despite all the negative publicity. It is the first time that the company has seen a setback which according to many is quite minor. The supporters of OpenAI are also saying that it will overcome it soon.

Analyzing the Reasons Behind the Dip

The experts still ran an analysis and tried to find the reasons behind it. Lately, the company decided to discontinue Microsoft’s Bing search services. The team attributed it to Bing’s design to bypass the paywalls. This move drew a lot of attention as Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI. The former incorporated the latter’s GPT-4 LLM to accelerate the search engine, Bing.

The search engine pays a fat amount to the AI company for its services. But it doesn’t charge its visitors for the same services. Reportedly, Bing is incurring $700,000 per day for providing this service to its visitors. On the other hand, OpenAI depends on its subscription model labeled ChatGPT Plus services that include the GPT-4 LLM.  It provides the older models to the free users and charges them for premium solutions.

The users can also access the customized versions of the service. Now, the dip in visitors can be linked to users’ accessing the advanced solutions on Bing for free. Still, ChatGPT is registering higher traffic than Bing. Also, the emergence of many other competitors could be hurting the business of OpenAI.

As market analysts noted, a large number of people are also shifting toward the AI chatbot market. More importantly, ChatGP doesn’t have the exclusivity factor to its name as many others are providing the same solutions. The company will have to focus on attracting users by offering something different. So, it would be interesting to see if OpenAI has a trick up its sleeve to beat the odds.
