Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and other giants to abide by the AI safeguard standards set by the White House, said Joe Biden on July 21, 2023. On July 21, 2023, President Joe Biden, said that leading artificial development companies have agreed to the standards set by the White House. The list includes giants of the tech arena like Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Google, among others. Lawmakers say this is a huge step towards addressing the “enormous” promise and risks underlying the technology.
Current White House resident announced that his administration managed to secure voluntary commitments from seven companies operating in the United States. They would now ensure that all their current and upcoming products around artificial intelligence are safe. Also, the commitment calls for third-party oversight of the operations of commercial AI products.
However, the details of who will be auditing the technology or which agency will oversee the company’s accountability are yet to be revealed. Authorities argue that they should now be vigilant about the threats of this emerging technology. Additionally, the companies bringing such products into the markets have a “fundamental obligation” to ensure their product’s safety.
The Need to Keep Artificial Intelligence in Check
Biden asserted that social media is a great example, showing technology’s power and what it can do if kept unchecked. Further, he added that the commitments from these seven companies can be a welcoming and promising step. Still, there is much to do collaboratively to keep the technology in check.
The recent surge in commercial investment in generative artificial intelligence, which can write convincing human-like texts and produce images from just prompts, has garnered public interest. But these qualities can be easily exploited by bad actors.
Imagine a scenario where an artificially generated image of a prominent world leader is murdering someone or an AI-generated voice of a loved one in distress can send a chill down the listener’s spine. It can be even more dangerous if an innocent individual is shown committing a severe crime using the technology. It can also be a source of spreading misinformation about serious and crucial events.
The four tech giants, including OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and promising startups like Anthropic and Inflection have also committed to security testing. It shall be carried out in parts by independent experts to safeguard against significant risks.
The testing would examine the potential that AI technology has in inflicting societal harm. With discrimination, bias, and theoretical dangers surrounding the advanced artificial intelligence system, the technology can one day gain the power to be self-sufficient and replicate itself. Moreover, the authority would publicly report the flaws and risks of the technology, said the White House.
United Nations Security Council Calls for a Global Body to Regulate the Technology
On July 18, 2023, the U.N. Security Council had a session dedicated to analyzing the threats of artificial intelligence. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres proposed the possibility of a global watchdog that would have the power to regulate artificial intelligence and carefully examine threats that the technology can possess and curb them.
