AI can make jobs easier and efficient. But, a threat of losing the job arises when their involvement increases. A generative AI and Jobs study was conducted by the ILO on August 21 which says that 24% of clerical tasks are considered highly exposed to automation and 58% have medium-level exposure.
The study reveals that instead of replacing the roles completely they will complement the existing jobs. Like the clerical jobs that could see most of their tasks automated. According to ILO, jobs like data entry clerks, typists, bookkeepers, and consultants are at risk. This shows that more women than men could be at risk, given their numbers in administrative roles.
ILO Highlights Threat to Administration Jobs
ILO reports also suggest that AI-automated work is likely to affect employees in high-income countries (5.5%) compared to low-income countries (0.4%). This generative AI study is concentrated on the impact of chatbot applications such as ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.
The report also suggests that customer service and coordination-related tasks, data management, record keeping, information processing, language services, and tasks related to responding to inquiries have high automation potential.
The customer service roles have been highly impacted. In 2022, some big names like Kraken have significantly reduced the headcounts which are mostly from customer service. At present, the customer service roles in Web3 comprise 832 (2.5%) of the total 33,846 listings on the cryptocurrency job board Web3, career.
But, ILO also concluded that the whole workplace won’t be affected by AI and the overall effect was neither positive nor negative for now. Eventually, its influence depends on how an AI tool is controlled and dealt with. There are no policies regarding and as a result, the benefits are only for developed countries and market participants whereas the cost to affected workers could be worse.
A recent survey shows that 62% of the total population believes that AI will affect the workplace widely over the next two decades. This leaves Americans worried about the future.
