- 1 Scroll, one of several Ethereum scaling networks that use zk-Rollups, launching soon.
- 2 The zkRollup enables native compatibility for existing Ethereum applications.
Ethereum community-built zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM), Scroll is launching soon after almost two years of development. The co-founder of Scroll, Ye Zhang said that he is aiming for “a community-driven decentralized immutable scaling solution for Ethereum.”
It must be noted that a group of blockchain idealists are quite close to the launch of their zkEVM, Scroll, which was developed with Ethereum’s values in mind.
Decentralization Support for Ethereum Blockchain
Scroll, a Layer-2 scaling project, has been in development for two years and uses zero-knowledge proofs to compress data off-chain. It means only proofs are submitted on-chain while enabling higher throughput.
At the Premier crypto event in Asia TOKEN2049, Scroll’s Ye Zhang said that the project was “idealistic.” He says the team was sticking to the philosophy and the principles that Ethereum already cultivates.
According to the report, the new zkEVM is set to launch within weeks. It has already undergone extensive testing and carried out audits on the code. Moreover, the project’s mathematician considers ZK-rollups as the “holy grail” or best-in-class Layer-2 scaling solutions; very cheap and secure.
Notably, Scroll is coming to a crowded ecosystem that already has zkEVM solutions from Immutable, StarkWare, zkSync Era, and ConsenSys’ Linea, which launched in August 2023.
On September 17, 2023, Scroll shared an X (formerly Twitter) post that includes the highlights of the past week’s events on the project. It added about the meeting update in Austin, Singapore, and Berlin. Meanwhile, in another ecosystem update, Scroll covers Decentralized Finance (DeFi) aggregators and permissionless lending protocols.
We had an amazing time meeting you all throughout the week in Austin, Singapore, and Berlin!

Scroll’s Co-founder Saying Over the Project
In a media interaction, Zhang said the project was more human interest as compared to simply solving computational problems. He said “We started in an open-source way, in a community-driven way. We can grow this community very organically, and then grow our network effect, not in a very silly way, not in a very marketing-driven aggressive way.”
Zhang said they have been working on this mostly as a “labor of love,” driven by a shared vision to scale the blockchain network. Meanwhile, keep true to its decentralization principles. He shared that Scroll will launch after some final measures like testing. This also includes major projects like UniSwap and Aave that are ready to deploy on Scroll at launch.
Scroll co-founder also claimed that some of the other systems like Linea have some “unproven” parts in the circuit. However, he believes the project provides a “complete proof” of all Ethereum “opcodes” and components of the transaction.
Zhang further said, “So it’s not only compared to compatibility but also a full proof for proving that everything we already have.” Although, the initial setup will still involve some centralization such as sequencers, as Zhang said. However, over time, the roadmap will decentralize the project.
