The corporate structure across industries has become sufficiently complicated that a shift in the upper management rarely affects the employees, let alone their intention to stay in the company. It seems that OpenAI employees are changing the common belief.

The revolt-like actions after the unceremonious ousting of Sam Altman suggest that the ChatGPT creator company is on the brink of mutiny. Over 90% of the existing staff threatened to resign and join Altman at Microsoft.

In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI co-founder and former CEO Sam Altman and former president Greg Brockman joined Microsoft. CEO Satya Nadella announced the news of their joining Microsoft’s new advanced AI team. Ironically, Nadella noted the continued support and confidence in the company.

Without disclosing much about the role and responsibilities at Microsoft, Altman noted reposting Nadella’s post “the mission continues”.

On a similar line, Brockman was also prudent with words. He wrote, “to build something new & it will be incredible.”

In the streak of notes on X (formerly Twitter), many OpenAI executives were seen to share their grief on the decision to fire Altman and Brockman. Surprisingly, this also includes co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. He wrote in a post about regretting his “participation in the board’s actions.”

Most top executives at the company posted “OpenAI is nothing without its people” and Altman was seen dropping heart emojis to all of them.

OpenAI Employees May Turn the Nightmare True

OpenAI executives were concerned that “OpenAI is nothing without its people” could turn out to be true amid the ongoing turbulence. Hundreds of current employees at the artificial intelligence (AI) company are reportedly threatening the board to resign and leave right away.

Wired and journalist Kara Swisher reported that over 500 employees wrote a letter to the OpenAI board and told to resign. The instance could be nothing less than a nightmare for the company with more than 700 employees.

The employees noted in the letter that Microsoft, which already employed Altman and Brockman, “assured” them that it has positions in the new subsidiary and can hire all the employees at OpenAI if they choose to join.

Since the news of Altman’s abrupt firing from the company, a majority of employees were upset and demanded to bring him back along with Brockman or they would resign too.

Given the board’s decision to stay put and appoint a new CEO, with Altman and Brockman joining Microsoft, it appears that Microsoft could potentially acquire Altman’s initial several hundred employees, assuming the validity of the company’s commitment to hire them all.

Musk Did Not Miss the Opportunity to Poke

X owner Elon Musk responded in his known sarcastic and witty way and stated “Now they will have to use Teams!” He mentioned Altman and Brockman using Microsoft Teams sarcastically pinched because both executives were fired in a board discussion on Google Meet.
