Leading tech companies are in the quest to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to their offerings. E-commerce giant Amazon recently announced the launching of its own AI-powered assistant for business. The company has made investments in AI projects such as OpenAI rival Anthropic and now seeks to launch an in-house AI tool.

Amazon Web Services announced on X (formerly Twitter) on November 28, that it has launched a business-focused artificial intelligence chatbot assistant dubbed “Amazon Q.” The chatbot is said to come in handy for conversations, it can resolve issues, help in generating content, research to gain insights and knowledge, and set up connections with information repositories, data, and enterprise systems of the company.

As part of Amazon’s expansive strategy to integrate generative AI into its product ecosystem, Amazon Q takes center stage, aiming to become a valuable tool for employees across consumer and private sector fronts.

The company envisions Q as a resource that delivers immediate, pertinent information and advice, streamlining tasks, accelerating decision-making, and fostering creativity and innovation in the workplace.

AWS CEO Adam Selipsky, in a recent CNBC interview on November 28, highlighted the diverse range of employees set to benefit from Q, including those in human resources, legal, product management, design, manufacturing, and operations. Significantly, Q is trained on a wealth of data, drawing from 17 years of AWS information.

Major clients of AWS, such as financial giants Vanguard and Deloitte, as well as telecommunication leaders Samsung and Verizon, along with entertainment conglomerate Disney, stand to leverage the AI chatbot’s capabilities once a comprehensive version is fully rolled out. Presently, Q is exclusively available in preview mode in Oregon and northern Virginia in the United States.

Amazon’s Foray in Crowded AI Space

Amazon’s substantial investments in the AI sector include a $4 Billion commitment to Anthropic, the team behind the Claude 2 chatbot, with a strong reliance on computational power sourced from AWS. Notably, Amazon’s tech rivals, Google and Meta, introduced their own AI chatbots, Google Bard and LLaMA, in 2023, while Microsoft made a substantial $13 Billion investment in OpenAI.

The unfolding landscape of AI-driven tools and investments underscores Amazon’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements, positioning itself as a key player in the ever-evolving realm of artificial intelligence.

It’s important to note that Amazon’s Q is distinct from Q*, an AI project by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Q* recently faced controversy surrounding the removal and subsequent reinstatement of OpenAI’s founder and CEO, Sam Altman

The anonymous project of OpenAI is still unknown but the initial information suggests it could be an artificial general intelligence (AGI) model. The AGI models are far ahead of artificial intelligence tech seen today.

Such models, theoretically, are equal to or even beyond human intelligence. Altman was allegedly hiding the information from the board which resulted in his abrupt ousting from the company, which he later rejoined a couple of days later.
