Fortnite is a franchise released by Epic Games in 2017. It is a battle royale platform where more than 100 competitors compete against each other with fanciful weapons, vehicles, and gadgets. The game was in full swing during a pandemic and the whole world seemed to be playing. Now, the company is developing a metaverse in it.

In Fortnite Creative, there is a sandbox-style mode that permits the players to build their public maps. Last March the company took a huge step by building a sharing model where 40 percent of the game’s net revenue i.e. estimated to be in Billions to people who publish their games on the platform.

At the same time, the company has also broadcast the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) which is an application consisting of a set of tools from Unreal Engine. It is a  3D graphics framework used to develop many hit games including Fortnite.

The gamers are not only creating mini-games but also with the help of these tools they are creating the entire interactive network. Besides, the fall of the proposed metaverse by Mark Zuckerberg, Epic is still growing its army of designers.

View of Gamers and Developers Regarding Fortnite Metaverse

Chad Mustard, brother of previous Fortnite’s chief creative officer said “Facebook has tons of users but they’re not gamers.” He also added, “The only way a metaverse could ever exist is with user-generated content.”

Mackenzie Jackson, 31, assembled her views as she was just a gamer who with her brother was always on the lookout for free titles, which drew them to Fortnite. Now, Fortnite Creative caught her attention. She said “ That, for me, was eye-opening. I have the tools to make whatever I want.”

As stated by Jackson, she first saw it as a hobby and Epic asked if she wanted to help design one of the Fortnite Welcome Hubs, which is a portal where creators would access their games and those built by others. She then flew to Epic’s headquarters in Cary, North Carolina where she met another crater, Simon Bell with whom she collaborated.

Saxs Persson, executive vice president at Epic, said that after the 2023 UEFN upgrade the platform came up with advanced tech. In an interview with Rolling Stones, he said that the company was delighted by how 300 to 400 new “Islands”- Epic’s term for individual games – are published daily.

Josh Bensing, CEO of 404 Creative said “The metaverse is always going to be in gaming.” 404 Creative is a bootstrapped company of Fortnite creators who do not have much background in game design.

Summary

Fortnite, a franchise game by Epic has come up with tools that facilitate gamers to develop and publish their own games on the platform. This way they are collaborating with the developers to build their metaverse. The fans are joining the race to add more creativity to the platform.
