Grayscale Investments is one of the world’s largest crypto-based asset management firms. It has assets under its management worth more than $34 billion. Grayscale is renowned for its Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). It has currently applied to convert it to a spot ETF.

Grayscale has marked a victory against the US SEC in August 2023. It occurred when the Court ruled that the financial regular acted arrogant and inconsistent. It was experienced when it rejected its previous attempt to convert its trust into an ETF.

The Grayscale investment is the second largest BTC entity in the world, as it has more than 620,000 units of the top cryptocurrency valued at around $25 billion.

This new year, GrayScale Investments will mark a major change in its board. Barry Silbert, the chairman of the board, has resigned from his post. He is the founder and CEO of DCG. His resignation will be effective January 1, 2024.

Mark Shifke will replace Silbert and become the new chairman of the Grayscale board. Currently, he has been working as the CFO of Digital Current Group (DCG).

Reasons for the Resignation of Silbert

The New York Attorney General, Letitia James, filed a civil lawsuit against Barry Silbert a few months ago. The case was about Silbert’s failure to play his role of informing investors of the financial health status of Genesis Global Capital.

Moreover, he failed to inform investors about the heavy losses incurred from the business operations of the firm.

He was accused of defrauding over 230,000 investors worth more than $1 billion. Since then, there have been several other complications of a similar nature. Silbert’s resignation just before the approval of the BTC ETF is very skeptical.

New Board of Administration

The new board of directors consists of Mark Shifke, Matthew Kummel, Edward McGee, and Michael Sonnenshein.Mark Shifke will serve as chairman of Grayscale.

Matthew Kummel is the current senior vice president of operations at DCG and will be the new member of the board of Grayscale.Edward McGee will serve as the CFO of Grayscale. He will combine board duties with responsibilities at the digital asset management firm.

Apart from Barry Silbert, Mark Murphy, president of DCG, has also resigned. All the changes are indicated and announced through an SEC filing released on December 26, 2023. All the changes will be implemented on January 1, 2024.

Implications of the Change in Board

The change in the board at Grayscale Investments comes when the firm is already involved in talks with the SEC for approval of converting its GBTC into a spot bitcoin ETF. The approval is expected to arrive in January 2024.

With the board change, the firm has become more optimistic about receiving approval. Michael Sonnenshein, CEO of Grayscale, has also supported this optimism. He added that with the spot BTC ETF approval, there could be an inflow of more than $30 trillion into the crypto markets.
