Nvidia is a technology company that manufactures computer chips. It is known as the leader of the design market for graphics processing units. Based in the U.S., its popularity is based on its provision of high-end GPUs in the market.

Potential relaunch of GPUs production

Nvidia’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, Colette Kress, stated that the chip-making giant Nvidia is planning to restart the production of dedicated graphics processing units (GPUs). These GPUs were made exclusively for cryptocurrency miners.

CMPs, the specialized cards

Colette put forward her statement during the 19th Annual J.P. Morgan Tech/Auto Forum Conference held on January 12.

She proclaimed, as the SeekingAlpha transcription suggests, that the entire decision depends on the demand of the GPUs in the cryptocurrency market. If the demand surges to a remarkable level, the company could potentially begin to sell the specialised cards called CMPs.

CMPs are similar to GPUs. The only difference is that the CMPs do not have the provision for video outputs. This impacts their cost of production and hence, they can be sold at a cheaper value.

Nvidia’s association with mining demand

Currently, miners are approaching the value output of Nvidia’s RTX 30-Series GPUs.

However, Kress stated that the company doesn’t believe that mining demand has any significant influence on their business today. In contrast, she claimed that the gaming demand is extremely powerful and it exceeds their current supply.

The RTX 30-Series supply is expected to stay tight until the end of Q1 2021. In that context, the relaunch of CMPs could reduce constraints on the consumer product line.

Thus, GPUs can easily help in mining cryptocurrencies like Ethereum’s ether (ETH, +13.47%). However, Bitcoin mining requires more specialised and more expensive processors called ASICs.

It will be interesting for the readers on how the technology company proceeds with the respective plan. Moreover, if the relaunch happens, will there be fresh advancements or will the company continue with its existing version?
