Recently, it has been reported that a Bitcoin ATMmachine has been stolen from the popular city of Barcelona, the local police are reportedly looking into the incident.
Bitcoin ATMs are such exchange centers that allow users to purchase cryptocurrencies with their Debit or Credit cards. The state also hosts such ATMs where users can change their tokens, especially Bitcoin for cash. According to stats held by Coin ATM radar, there exist about 158 such ATMs in Spain which happens to be the highest in the continent.
According to the local media, the robbers stole the ATM machine from the Beethoven street in the area of Sarria in Barcelona. The area is considered as one the most well-settled areas where elites of the city reside. As a matter of fact, the area also happens to be the home branch of the popular GreyScale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) exchange. It was also reported that at least 8 people were part of the crime which also consequently calls for speculation of a gang behind the crime.
According to Catalonia’s Mossos d’ Esquada, the police force of Spain issued a statement that the ATM had been stolen at around 3:00 AM. However the police force refused to comment much on the case as it would hinder the investigation, GBTC also went silent due to the investigation. Apart from the local media, there is no confirmation of the exact location where the robbery took place.
An unverified alleged video of the incident has been going viral, where the robbers are seen rammig their SUV in the GBTC store on the Beethoven Street and aggressively pacing themselves to weasel out in front of several people while some of them also recorded the incident. It was also seen that one of the robbers sprayed Fire extinguishers towards onlookers & Bystanders, who were recording the incident, so that their identities remain hidden.
In recent months, this happens to be a second attack over GBTC. The prior incident was of such a kind where looters harassed & robbed the GBTC cashier where the person sustained minor injuries.
